Matter partnered with Haptic and Stephen Taylor Architects on sustainable social housing for the Royal Borough of Greenwich. Our low-carbon, flood-resilient engineering reduces embodied carbon and supports SME-led, community-focused development.

Matter believes that human-centred, sustainable structural design not only creates social value, it also makes good business sense. Our new Social Impact Report shows the measurable social and environmental impact we’re making, in our local community of South East London and beyond.

Considered a milestone in building safety regulation, the Building Safety Act became law in April 2022 in response to the tragedy of the Grenfell Tower fire in 2017. At Matter, as structural engineers driven by social responsibility, we see the application of the Building Safety Act as an opportunity to embed social responsibility in the design, planning and construction of buildings, for everyone’s benefit.

There are so many ways we can make a difference implementing sustainable practices and technologies to mitigate the environmental impact. From constructing buildings with smaller carbon footprints to developing systems that monitor and reduce pollution, there’s no shortage of options.

The regeneration of Cody Dock is an inspiring story of community, creativity and determination, and Matter is proud to be part of it. Our founder Christina talks about working with Cody Dock to transform an abandoned wasteland into a thriving hub for the local community.

Design Future London’s 2023 challenge invited young people aged 5-24 to reimagine a greener, safer Croydon – using Minecraft! Matter’s founder, Christina, mentored a group of 11-14 year-olds through charity Reach Out 2 Kids, and shares some of the amazing results they achieved together.
